D. D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas
  Damodar Dharmanand Kosambi Damodar Dharmanand Kosambi a historian, mathematician, statistician and acknowledged polymath was a pioneer who introduced new perspectives and methods in Indological studies. He contributed to the genetics by introducing Kosambi's map function. He is well-known for his work in numismatics and for compiling critical editions of ancient Sanskrit texts. D.D. Kosambi was also a historian specializing in ancient India who employed the historical materialist approach in his work. He is described as "the patriarch of the Kosambi school of Indian historiography". He was an enthusiast of universal brotherhood, religious harmony and moral values, and, in addition, a leading activist in the World Peace Movement.

In honour of this legendary son of the soil, Government of Goa - India decided to celebrate the Birth Centenary of D.D. Kosambi from 31st July 2007 to 31st July 2008, to focus attention on his life and work as also the extraordinary life and achievements of his father - Dharmanand Kosambi. From the year 2008 it was decided to organize an intellectual festival in the name of D.D.Kosambi Festival of Ideas, in the month of February every year.

The Department of Art and Culture, Government of Goa - India organizes this annual event wherein eminent personalities from various fields are invited to deliver a talk/lecture on different topics of their choice. The Festival is attended by a large number of people - professionals, intellectuals, students and people from all walks of life - who look forward to the stimulation of ideas.

This Festival is the only one of its kind in the Country. The people of Goa eagerly wait for this festival, over the year, to commence and the festival is thronged by enthusiastic and zealous people from all corners of Goa.

The 1st D.D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas - 2008 was organized from 4th to 7th February 2008. The speakers for this Festival were:
• H.E. Hamid Ansari, Hon'ble Vice President of India,
• Prof. Romila Thapar, eminent Historian,
• Ms. Meera Kosambi, Scholar and daughter of D.D. Kosambi,
• Mr. P. Sainath, Magsaysay award winner, Journalist and
• Dr. Vivek Monteiro, a well known Scientist.

The 2nd D.D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas - 2009 was organized from 26th February to 1st March 2009. The speakers of the festival were:
• Mr. Rajdeep Sardesai, Eminent Journalist & Editor-in-Chief of CNN - IBN,
• Mr. Nandan Nilekani - Renowned Entrepreneur & Co-Chairman of Infosys Technologies Ltd.,
• Dr. Ramachandra Guha - an Internationally acclaimed Historian & Intellect and
• Mr. Jaime Lerner, World famous Architect, Expert on Urban Planning & former Governor of Parana Brazil.

The 3rd D.D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas - 2010 was organized from 8th February to 12th February 2010. The speakers of the festival were:
• Mr. Girish Karnad, internationally acclaimed playwright, poet, actor, director, critic, and translator,
• Dr. Kiran Bedi, India's first and highest ranking (retired in 2007) woman officer who joined the Indian Police Service and active Social activist,
• Mr. Harsh Mander, prominent Human Rights activist and author in India, former Deputy Director of the IAS Academy at Mussoorie and Director of Action Aid India and
• Mr. Gurucharan Das, former CEO of Procter & Gamble and eminent Author and Columnist.


The 4th D.D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas - 2011 was organized from 5th February to 10th February 2011. The eminent speakers of the festival were:
• Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar (Eminent Scientist of India and President of Global Research Alliance),
• His Excellency Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam (Former President of India and Eminent Scientist),
• His Holiness The Dalai Lama (World renowned spiritual leader and crusader of Peace),
• Lord Meghnad Desai (Indian-born British economist and acclaimed intellect),
• Justice Albie Sachs (Former Judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa and active Human right activist) and
• Dr. Karan Singh (Hon. MP of Rajya Sabha and President of ICCR).

The 5th D.D. Kosambi Festival of Ideas - 2012 was organized from 7th February to 11th February 2012. The eminent speakers of the festival were:

A Talk by Shri Narayana Murthy

 Shri. Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy - usually referred to as Narayana Murthy, is an Indian businessman and the co-founder of Infosys, a multinational corporation providing business consulting, technology, engineering, and outsourcing services. Murthy served as the CEO of Infosys for 21 years from 1981 to 2002 and was succeeded by co-founder Nandan Nilekani. On 1st June 2013, Murthy returned to Infosys as Executive Chairman and Additional Director. Murthy has been listed among the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine. He has been described as Father of Indian IT sector by Time magazine due to his contribution to outsourcing in India. Murthy has also been honored with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards.

A Talk By Dr. Vandana Shiva

 

Dr. Vandana Shiva - is an Indian environmental activist and anti-globalization author Shiva, currently based in Delhi, has authored more than 20 books. She was trained as a physicist and received her PhD in philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1978 with the doctoral dissertation "Hidden variables and locality in quantum theory." She is one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization. She is a member of the scientific committee of the Fundacion IDEAS, Spain's Socialist Party's think tank. She is also a member of the International Organization for a Participatory Society. She received the Right Livelihood Award in 1993, and numerous other prizes. She has assisted grassroots organizations of the Green movement in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria with campaigns against genetic engineering. In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which led to the creation of Navdanya in 1991, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. Shiva has also served as an adviser to governments in India and abroad as well as non-governmental organisations, including the International Forum on Globalization, the Women's Environment & Development Organization and the Third World Network.

"Search for Extra-terrestrial Life in the universe"

A Talk By Prof. Jayant Narlikar

 

Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar - is an Indian astrophysicist. Narlikar is a proponent of steady state cosmology. He developed with Sir Fred Hoyle the conformal gravity theory, commonly known as Hoyle-Narlikar theory. Narlikar is internationally known for his work in cosmology, especially in championing models native to the popular Big Bang model. During 1994-1997, he was the President of the Cosmology Commission of the International Astronomical Union. His research work has involved Mach's Principle, quantum cosmology, and action-at-a-distance physics. During 1999-2003, Narlikar headed an international team in a pioneering experiment designed to sample air for microorganisms in the atmosphere at heights of up to 41 km. Narlikar was appointed as the Chairperson of The Advisory Group for Textbooks in Science and Mathematics, the textbook development committee responsible for developing textbooks in Science and Mathematics, published by NCERT, which are used widely as standard textbooks in many Indian schools. Narlikar has received several national and international awards and honorary doctorates. India's second highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan, was awarded to him in 2004 for his research work. Prior to this, in 1965, he was conferred Padma Bhushan. He received Maharashtra Bhushan Award for the year 2010. He is a recipient of Bhatnagar Award, M.P. Birla Award, and the Prix Jules Janssen of the French Astronomical Society. He is an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, and a Fellow of the three Indian National Science Academies and the Third World Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Kishore Mahbubani

A Talk by Prof. Kishore Mahbubani

 

Prof. Kishore Mahbubani- is an Indian Sindhi. He is a notable academic and former Singaporean diplomat. He is currently Professor in the Practice of Public Policy and Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. From 1971 to 2004 he served in the Singaporean Foreign Services, ending up as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He served as President of the United Nations Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002. Mahbubani is best known outside Singapore for his books Can Asians Think?, Beyond The Age Of Innocence: Rebuilding Trust between America and the World. He continues to serve in Boards and Councils of several institutions in Singapore, Europe and North America, including the Yale President's Council on International Activities (PCIA), Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, Indian Prime Minister's Global Advisory Council, University of Bocconi International Advisory Committee, World Economic Forum - Global Agenda Council on China and Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Nominating Committee. He was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Gold) by the Singapore Government in 1998. The Foreign Policy Association Medal was awarded to him in New York in June 2004 with the following opening words in the citation: "A gifted diplomat, a student of history and philosophy, a provocative writer and an intuitive thinker". Prof Mahbubani was also listed as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines in September 2005.

Baroness Patricia Scotland of Asthal - is a British barrister, and served in many ministerial positions within the UK Government, most notably as the Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland. Baroness Scotland made history in 1991 by becoming the first black woman to be appointed a Queen's Counsel. She later founded 1 Gray's Inn Square barrister's chambers. Early in 1997 she was elected as a Bencher of the Middle Temple. Scotland was named as a Millennium Commissioner on 17 February 1994, and was a member of the Commission for Racial Equality. She received a life peerage on a Labour Party list of working peers in 1997. On 28 June 2007 Baroness Scotland was appointed Attorney General by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.[2] She was the first woman to hold the office since its foundation in 1315. As Attorney General she was the Chief legal adviser to: Her Majesty the Queen, Parliament and the Government, Supervisor and Superintendent of the Prosecutorial Authorities (SFO,CPS, RCPO), Leader of the Bar and had non-statutory oversight of the prosecutors in government departments, the Treasury Solicitors Department and armed services prosecuting authority.


An interaction session between the public and the speakers is held subsequent to the talk delivered by the speaker to elucidate any doubts in the minds of the people regarding the talk.
